The Ministry of Communications, Digitalisation and Innovation’s Monitoring and Evaluation, Communications and Delivery Entity (M-CODe) has launched a nationwide monitoring exercise to track the sanitation performance of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country.
The exercise is aimed at assessing the commitment, effectiveness, and impact of local government leaders in implementing government sanitation policies and directives, particularly the National Sanitation Campaign.

According to M-CODe, the monitoring will focus on key areas including waste management, drainage desilting, public education on sanitation, enforcement of sanitation by-laws and the general state of cleanliness in markets, lorry stations, and flood-prone communities.
Officials of M-CODe said the initiative will provide real-time data on sanitation activities at the local level and help identify best practices as well as challenges hindering progress.
In a statement from the Executives of M-CODe, the purpose of the nationwide monitoring is to ensure accountability and improve service delivery at the local level.
MMDCEs play a critical role in achieving a clean and healthy environment stating that their performance will be tracked and reported accordingly.
The monitoring teams are expected to visit all 16 regions and engage stakeholders including environmental health officers, waste management companies, market associations and community members.
M-CODe noted that findings from the exercise will be compiled and submitted to the appropriate authorities to inform policy decisions and strengthen coordination between central and local governments in the fight against poor sanitation.
The Ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to making sanitation a national priority and urged all MMDCEs to cooperate fully with the monitoring teams to ensure the success of the exercise.
