Over 20,000 people across AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mines host communities have benefited from the company’s healthcare initiative dubbed – Mini Clinics – since its inception in 2021, Mr. Edmund Oduro Agyei, Director, Sustainability Management of AGA has disclosed.
Speaking at the second Mini Clinic for the year at the Zongo Playing Grounds in Obuasi, Mr. Oduro Agyei said “this remarkable achievement demonstrates the growing confidence the communities have in preventive healthcare and the positive impact of bringing quality healthcare services closer to the people.”
He pointed out that beyond safety, AGA is committed to making a positive contribution towards an enduring world where access to quality healthcare is not a privilege but a right.
The day’s programme provided free medical consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar screening, eye and dental services, body mass index and gynaecological screening, among others.
He expressed appreciation to AGA partners in the programme which included Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, Procrest Africa, AGA Health Foundation and Ghana Health Service.
Dr. Wunam Abdul Basit, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at AGA Health Foundation noted that good health begins not only in the hospital, but also through education, prevention, early detection, as well as informed choices.
He urged women to always seek early intervention on any gynaecological problem they may encounter, noting that early detection of the problem saves lives. On pregnant women, Dr. Abdul Basit advised pregnant women to attend antenatal clinics regularly to enable the caregivers to identify complications related to pregnancy and offer required intervention to prevent any adverse outcome.
He charged the entire Zongo Community to take advantage of the mini clinic to undergo screening and identify any conditions they may not be aware of. The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin expressed her appreciation to the Zongo Community for attending the Mini Clinic in their numbers. She called on the management of AGA to endeavour to get more of the youth in Obuasi hooked to the mine.
Mr. Kwasi Oduro-Korankye, Head of Health Portfolio, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation that handled Dental Cases at the Mini Clinic that about 40 extractions as well as 120 scaling and polishing had been done by the close of the day.
