ECOWAS Donates US$250,000 To Support Ghana Flood Victims

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a donation of US$250,000 (approximately GH¢3 million) to support victims of the recent devastating floods in Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.

In a statement issued in Accra on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the Ministry said it had been officially notified by the ECOWAS Commission of the regional body’s decision to provide the financial assistance as part of efforts to support Ghana’s humanitarian response to the disaster.

According to the Ministry, the funds will be transferred to Ghana in due course, after which the entire amount will be handed over to support those affected by the floods.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that it has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GH¢3.00 million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods,” the statement said.

The Ministry assured the public that the Government would transfer the full amount immediately upon receipt of the funds into its accounts.

It described the donation as a demonstration of regional solidarity at a time when Ghana continues to recover from the destruction caused by the floods, which displaced thousands of residents and damaged homes, businesses and public infrastructure in several parts of the country.

The Government of Ghana expressed profound gratitude to ECOWAS for the gesture, describing it as an act of genuine African solidarity and compassion.

“The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion,” the Ministry stated.

The donation adds to ongoing efforts by the Government and humanitarian organisations to provide relief and assist communities affected by the floods. It also underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting member states in responding to emergencies and natural disasters.
