KUMASI — Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak are set to clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday to herald the Matchday 22 games of the Ghana Premier League.
Dubbed the ‘Clash of Titans’ following its enormity in Ghana’s football scene, the matchup is expected to draw crowds from across the country as the two traditional sides battle for the bragging rights currently held by the Porcupine Warriors.
Kotoko emerged victorious in the initial leg in Accra and will aim for a double, but the Phobians have expressed determination to exact their pound of flesh, promising 90 minutes of fireworks at the venue.
League leaders Medeama SC will kick-start the round of matches today as they welcome Aduana FC at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium.
History favours Medeama in this fixture. They have beaten Aduana FC in four of their last five league meetings at home, keeping clean sheets in the last three — including back-to-back 2-0 victories.
But under Cioba Aristica, Aduana have developed into one of the league’s strongest travelling sides. With four away victories, the joint second-highest tally in the league, alongside two draws and four defeats, they have shown resilience on the road and could be a thorn in the flesh for the leaders.
Eleven Wonders’ struggles may continue as they face a stubborn Vision FC side, hovering just one point above the relegation zone but showing far greater resilience.
In other venues, defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars will have all to play for when they welcome Basake Holy Stars at the Bibiani Dun’s Park on Sunday.
At the Berekum Golden City Park, relegation-threatened Berekum Chelsea will host Kpando Hearts of Lions in a game expected to be full of thrills.
In other matches, Hohoe United will welcome Nations FC; Bechem United will play Young Apostles at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park in Bechem; Dreams FC will host Karela United at the Tuba Astro Turf, while Swedru All Blacks host Samartex FC at the Swedru Stadium.
