A private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for desperately “working to cover up the weight of corruption under ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo.”
He said the party’s decision to refer former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Adwoa Sarfo to the National Disciplinary Committee because of her recent media commentaries is a “desperate attempt to hide the crass corruption under Akufo-Addo.”
“We all know that President Akufo-Addo’s government is the most corrupt regime Ghana has had since independence, and any attempt by the NPP to shield corrupt appointees in that government should be resisted at all costs in the public interest,” Mr Brako-Powers said.
The lawyer was reacting to a letter issued by the NPP referring the former lawmaker to the party’s disciplinary committee for her recent media utterances.
Adwoa Sarfo has raised grave issues with managing and operating the School Feeding Programme under ex-President Akufo-Addo.
She has also said that Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye’s committee probing the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections is an attempt to brush off ex-Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for a new candidate.
The NPP has accused her of breaching the party’s constitution and directives for members to desist from discussing party issues that “create unrest, negativism and disaffection in the media and other related platforms.”
Reacting to NPP’s letter, private legal practitioner Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers said the largest opposition party is in a “desperate situation” to cover the weight of corruption in the Akufo-Addo’s government.
“Bottling up discontent and disagreements does not heal past wounds. Many people in the NPP are hurting, not because the party suffered a major setback in 2024 but because serious issues require urgent attention. I don’t think the party as it is presently constituted is handling the situation properly,” Mr Brako-Powers said.
The lawyer has called President John Dramani Mahama to institute a high-profile probe into the School Feeding Programme activities under ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“President Mahama has to investigate the operations of the School Feeding Programme under Akufo-Addo and prosecute anyone found to have engaged in or benefited from any underhand dealings there,” Mr Brako-Powers said.
