President John Mahama
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will deliver the Message on the State of the Nation, which is popularly known as SoNA, to Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution.
Presenting the Business Statement on the floor of the House, Mr. Ayariga reminded Members of Parliament (MPs) of the importance of punctuality ahead of the high-profile address.
He urged all members to be seated in the Chamber by 9:15 a.m., stressing that it is inappropriate for MPs to enter or exit the Chamber once the President has arrived to deliver the address.
The Majority Leader further informed the House that, in preparation for the President’s appearance, Parliament will convene earlier than usual on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
According to him, the House is scheduled to sit at 10:00 a.m. that day to allow for an early adjournment ahead of the State of the Nation Address.
Commenting on the Business Statement, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Ofoase -Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, suggested that cocoa farmers should be invited to witness the SoNA, as has been done in previous years.
He said the presence of farmers would highlight the importance of the cocoa sector to the national economy.
Article 67 of the Constitution requires the President to deliver a State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament at the start of each parliamentary session and before dissolution.
This address provides an overview of the country’s economic, social, and financial status.
The annual address is expected to outline the government’s policies, achievements, and challenges, and it serves as a key mechanism for accountability.
