The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tettey Yohuno, has taken legal action against popular broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited, filing a defamation suit at the Accra High Court.
The suit, lodged on Thursday, January 2, 2025, follows claims made by Captain Smart during a radio and TV program on December 27, 2024.
According to court documents, Captain Smart accused certain individuals within the Ghana Armed Forces and some officials of the Ghana Police Service of plotting to destabilise the country’s constitutional order through a potential coup d'état. The broadcaster also allegedly claimed that Yohuno's appointment as Deputy IGP was politically motivated.
Captain Smart further alleged that Yohunu had been visiting the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials, while allegedly holding membership in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The claims suggested that Yohuno had been providing these officials with money in an effort to secure his appointment as IGP.
In response, the Deputy IGP is seeking general damages for defamation, as well as an injunction to prevent Captain Smart and Media General from making further defamatory statements. Yohunu is also requesting that the court compel the defendants to retract their statements and issue a public apology through the media house.
This legal action comes amidst growing tensions surrounding political appointments in Ghana, with Yohuno clearly aiming to protect both his personal reputation and the integrity of the Ghana Police Service from what he believes to be false and harmful allegations.
Meanwhile, Captain Smart has not responded yet, but many expect the outspoken broadcaster to do so in the coming days.
