Election Watch Ghana has expressed grave concern over allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during their recent press conference, which they say pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy and national security.
The NDC accused a Brigadier General of the Ghana Armed Forces, of spearheading an election-rigging operation for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing the allegations, Election Watch Ghana issued a strongly worded statement condemning the NPP’s alleged involvement in training thugs to disrupt the 2024 general elections. The group called on the ruling party to dismantle any criminal networks or plans designed to intimidate or harm citizens during the electoral period.
“We urge the NPP to take immediate action to dismantle any criminal organizations or plots aimed at terrorizing citizens before, during, and after the general election,” the statement read.
Election Watch Ghana also directed its demands at the Ghana Armed Forces, urging them to investigate and address the alleged involvement of the Brigadier in activities that could undermine the country’s electoral process.
Key Demands
The advocacy group outlined the following demands:
Both major political parties, the NPP and NDC, must prioritize the safety and well-being of Ghanaians above political ambitions.
Security agencies must act impartially and uphold the integrity of the electoral process. Any form of violence or chaos from either party will not be tolerated.
“Election Watch and the Ghanaian people will hold accountable any party responsible for disrupting the electoral process,” the statement emphasized.
Standing for Peace
Election Watch Ghana reiterated its commitment to a peaceful, free, and fair election. They encouraged all Ghanaians to reject violence and work together to ensure the nation remains united, regardless of the election’s outcome.
This reaction follows allegations by the NDC that the Brigadier was specifically promoted to his position to oversee election manipulation efforts in the Ashanti Region. NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi further claimed that the General was training NPP-aligned thugs at the Asutuare Military Camp, allegedly preparing them to disrupt the elections.
Gyamfi alleged that these individuals were being outfitted in military attire to create chaos on Election Day, targeting NDC supporters, agents, and innocent civilians.
Election Watch Ghana called for transparency and accountability from both the NPP and the military, stressing the importance of safeguarding the democratic process and ensuring the upcoming elections reflect the true will of the people.
“Together, we will ensure that Ghana emerges victorious, regardless of the election outcome,” the group concluded.
