President-elect John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration will not abuse the supreme majority that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds in Parliament.
He emphasized the importance of consulting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority to build consensus on national issues.
Speaking during engagements at his office in Accra on Thursday, December 12, Mahama stated, “We are not going to misuse the Majority we have. We will consult with the Minority to build consensus in the interest of this country.”
Mahama and the NDC won the December 7, 2024, general elections, marking his return to the presidency after eight years in opposition. The transition from the Akufo-Addo government to Mahama’s incoming administration has already begun.

The Joint Transition Team, tasked with overseeing the handover from President Akufo-Addo to President-elect John Mahama, has been inaugurated. The brief inauguration ceremony took place at the Accra International Conference Centre on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
During the state ceremony, President Akufo-Addo handed over the transition notes to President-elect Mahama and assured him of a smooth transfer of power. “I like to assure both of them (President-elect and Vice President-elect) of the full support of my government and myself for an effective transition and wish them luck and God’s blessing in the discharge of their high responsibilities,” President Akufo-Addo noted.
The transition processes are firmly grounded in the Presidential Transition Act of 2012, Act 845 which provides the legal framework for an orderly and transparent transition.
In his speech, the President-elect John Mahama justified the competence of his selected members on the joint Transitional team and expressed confidence in them to expeditiously deliver in accordance with law.
“We pray that the members of the joint transitional team will work within the confines of the law to fulfill the wishes of the Ghanaian people as expressed on the December 7,”
“I wish to ask that we all be guided by the spirit of the Presidential Transition Act to ensure smooth and seamless transition, we may belong to different political parties, but we all belong to one Ghana,” Mahama emphasised.
