The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the reintroduction and passage of the anti-LGBTQ bill, officially known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Speaking on the matter, Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, emphasized that overwhelming public support for the bill leaves no room for hesitation.
“What we want is that it is made into a law,” he stated, adding that passing the bill does not preclude teaching its provisions in schools through civic education and other channels.
He further dismissed concerns that technical arguments should overshadow the will of the people.
“Ghanaians are overwhelmingly in favour of it, so we don’t want the use of any technical words to demean what Ghanaians want,” Reverend Gyamfi said.
During a meeting with the Bishops on January 14, President Mahama suggested that a government-sponsored bill would be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill.
He highlighted the importance of broad consultations and a national consensus to ensure its smooth passage.
Additionally, President Mahama proposed revising school curriculums to incorporate moral and cultural teachings that reflect Ghanaian and African values, ensuring future generations are rooted in their heritage.
But the Bishops reaffirmed their commitment to standing with the Ghanaian public in advocating for the timely passage of the bill, urging swift action to enshrine these values into law.
