Haruna Iddrisu nominated to take the helm at the Ministry of Education

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, as Minister of Education. 

Haruna Iddrisu’s nomination reflects his extensive political experience and proven leadership capabilities. 

As a longstanding MP and former Leader in Parliament, Iddrisu has garnered a reputation for his strong advocacy for social equity and economic reform. 

He is expected to bring a results-driven approach to the Ministry of Education, prioritising policies that address critical challenges such as access to quality education, teacher welfare, and curriculum reform.

Over the years, Haruna Iddrisu has championed numerous legislative initiatives aimed at fostering inclusive growth. 

Since President Mahama’s inauguration on January 7th, many stakeholders and citizens have speculated about who would take over the Ministry of Education, given the challenges the sector faces. 

During his campaign, Mahama emphasised his commitment to improving the quality and accessibility of education, including a promise to review and enhance the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy. 

Key priorities for the Ministry of Education

As Minister of Education, Iddrisu will face the daunting task of addressing Ghana’s educational challenges, particularly in the wake of growing concerns over the implementation of the Free SHS policy.

While the policy has expanded access to education, it has also exposed systemic weaknesses such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate infrastructure, and strained resources.

The nomination of Haruna Iddrisu will be subject to parliamentary vetting and approval. Given his track record and stature within Ghanaian politics, his confirmation is widely anticipated.

This appointment also underscores the Mahama administration’s broader strategy of aligning experienced leaders with key portfolios to deliver on campaign promises. It follows other high-profile nominations, such as Kwame Governs Agbodza for the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Agnes Naa Momo Lartey for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
