Several weeks after the general elections, the Ablekuma North Constituency has been thrust into the spotlight as the parliamentary election result remains undeclared, leaving the area without representation in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
Both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have declared victory, creating a political deadlock that has escalated to the courts.
The NPP asserts that their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie secured a clear victory in the December polls, citing results from the Electoral Commission.
However, the NDC strongly contests this, claiming that their candidate, Ewurabena Aubyn was legitimately elected.
Both parties have raised concerns about alleged irregularities and discrepancies in the pink sheets, fueling the dispute.
As the legal battle unfolds, residents of Ablekuma North are left in limbo, frustrated by the absence of a parliamentary representative to voice their concerns.
Meanwhile, residents in the constituency are questioning the future of their representation in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
With both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claiming victory, frustrations are mounting as the Electoral Commission (EC) and the courts work to resolve the impasse.
Residents are growing increasingly concerned about the delays, emphasizing the potential setbacks the constituency might face if the situation remains unresolved.
One resident expressed his fears: “As the President said in his first 120 days, a lot of things will come in. So, what will happen to Ablekuma North if by then nothing happens? We plead with the EC to do their possible best to make sure Ablekuma North has a representative in Parliament to prevent any setbacks here.”
Many are calling for a resolution that prioritizes fairness and avoids chaos.
“When we look at who has won, just give it to him. This person says I’ve won. This person says I’ve won. The other says I’ve won. And it brings chaos. It’s not going to take us anywhere,” another resident lamented.
Constituents are urging the EC and the judiciary to expedite the process to avoid further division and setbacks.
As court proceedings continue, the people of Ablekuma North hope for a transparent and timely resolution to the dispute, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their development needs are met.
