Special aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has called for an extensive audit of public lands in Ghana to address decades of alleged mismanagement.
Speaking on TV3’s The Keypoints on January 18, Mogtari emphasized the need for transparency in public land transactions and the preservation of these resources for future generations.
She urged investigators to examine records from as far back as Ghana’s independence, saying, “We need to understand where we were, where we are, and how we can preserve what is left of our public assets.”
Mogtari lamented the improper sale of lands without competitive processes, adding that some properties were grossly undervalued.
She also highlighted how the mismanagement of state lands has contributed to rising poverty and inflation.
“How can you buy land for GHS 150,000 and sell it for GHS 5 million? This has a direct impact on inflation and economic hardship,” she stated.
Touching on the reduction in the number of ministries, Ms Mogtari lauded the government’s decision.
She noted that the public’s warm reception of this announcement reflects a growing demand for efficiency and accountability in government.
“When you have a very large and amorphous government machinery, it creates dissatisfaction. The citizens were expecting this reduction, and it aligns with their aspirations,” she said.
