Member of Parliament for Bawku in the Upper East Region, Mahama Ayariga, has commended the military for its tireless efforts in ensuring peace as the government engages feuding factions to find a lasting solution to the prolonged Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
Ayariga expressed gratitude to the joint military taskforce for their role in protecting lives in the troubled town through patrols and providing escorts for civilians on the highways.
Speaking during the maiden West African Soldiers Social Activity held by the 11 Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces in Bolgtabga, Ayariga praised the peacekeeping troops for their professionalism, commitment, and discipline.
“Today, as we celebrate the fruits of your hard work, we also recognize the significant role you continue to play in ensuring the security and stability of Bawku. I must confess that the 11 Mechanised soldiers deployed in Bawku, including those of the joint taskforce, have an essential place in my heart. Their hard work during the 2024 election to bring peace to the region, especially Bawku, is very commendable. I would like to commend the General Officer Commanding the Northern Command and the election taskforce led by the regional police command for your instrumental leadership that facilitated peace in the entire region,” Ayariga said.
Acknowledging the challenging task of maintaining peace in the region, Ayariga further commended the military for their efforts in supporting and equipping troops with the necessary facilities to ensure effective operations. He pledged continued support and committed to leading advocacy in the 9th Parliament for enhanced infrastructure for military operations in the Upper East Region.
“The Armed Forces’ vision to enhance the infrastructure of this unit demonstrates a profound understanding of the need to support your troops with the resources and facilities required for operational effectiveness. I, Mahama Ayariga, will in the 9th Parliament become the chief advocate for infrastructure for the military,” he stated.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by the military in their line of duty, Ayariga reminded troops to strive to maintain the confidence people have in them. He emphasized that the mission of the army is not only about fulfilling their duties effectively but also about upholding the honour, integrity, and pride of the nation.
Touching on the curfew situation in Bawku, Ayariga revealed that President Mahama is working to ease the restrictions imposed by the curfew to reduce its impact on the social life and economic activities of the people.
He urged the public to continue cooperating with state institutions such as the police and military as the government seeks an amicable solution to the devastating conflict.
