Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza has called for a review of how road contracts are awarded in the country.
This follows the huge debts in the sector that he said the previous Akufo-Addo administration has left behind.
He said the Akufo-Addo administration left behind a minimum debt of 100 billion Ghana Cedis commitment.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday Janury 20, the Adaklu lawmaker said “It is the finance minister’s responsibility to gather the money to pay for the debt. However, we need to sit down with the industry players and contractors.
“The government needs to sit down and analyse if we should keep awarding contracts without knowing how it will be funded. How is it possible to award contracts 4 times above what has already been allocated for you in the budget.”
Agbodza further said that if he is approved, he will have discussions with the Finance Minister on how to deal with the road sector debt.
This, he said must stop hence his decision to have a discussion with the Minister.
“As of today the NPP is leaving a minimum debt of 100 billion Ghana cedis commitment,” he said.
“Whatever solution we have, we still owe, and we have to pay that is why I say I will meet with the Minister.
“If approved I will sit with the Finance Minister to see how we can deal with, this is money being wasted.
The Adaklu lawmaker further stated that there was a need to review how road contracts are awarded in Ghana.
“We need to sit up and meet with stakeholders, contractors and awarding agencies on the issues. The way we award contracts is problematic,” he said.
