Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu has said this administration will uncap the Ghana Education Tertiary Fund (GETFund) as a matter of urgency.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20 Haruna said this will be done in consultation with the finance minister.
“In the last few years, the GETFund has suffered because of the decision of the then Finance Minister to cap it. President Mahama has gone public and I join him to say that we will uncap GETFund to free additional resources to support robust infrastructural development.
“I will engage the Minster for Finance to uncap GETFund as a matter of expediency,” he stated.
The erstwhile government through the leadership of the then Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta capped the GETFund as part of recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in securing a loan deal from the Fund.
However, the Tamale South MP explained that uncapping the GETFund will be done while reviewing negotiations with the IMF.
“…and for the President to engage with the IMF to review the memorandum which included GETFund in the negotiations. President Mahama has said that he will review the IMF so part of the review will be to uncap the GETFund,” Haruna added.
The Ghana Education Trust (GET) Fund supports the delivery of quality education to the citizens of Ghana from the basic to tertiary level through dynamic funding policies aimed at ensuring equitable provision of essential resources for all levels of education to all segments of the Ghanaian population.
