Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin following a 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League.
The loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions since the winter break.
Tuesday’s result was Dortmund’s third loss in the Champions League group stage, leaving last season’s runners-up needing a win against Shakhtar Donetsk in their final group game to secure automatic qualification for the knockout phase.
Domestically, Dortmund’s poor start to 2025 has seen them suffer three straight Bundesliga defeats, dropping to 10th place in the league, seven points off the top four. Their current position puts their chances of returning to the Champions League next season at risk.
Sporting director Lars Ricken expressed regret over the decision. “We value Nuri Sahin and the work he has done. We had hoped for a long-term partnership and believed in a turnaround until the very end. This decision is painful for me personally, but after the Bologna game, it was unavoidable.”
Sahin, 36, who played for Dortmund in two separate stints, accepted the club’s decision. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best.”
Sahin took over as head coach in June 2024, succeeding Edin Terzic, who departed after the club’s Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.
