Shama: Kessewokan residents urge new government to prioritize completion of sea defense project

Residents of Kessewokan, a suburb of Abuesi in the Shama District, are grappling with the ongoing impacts of delayed sea defense construction from Aboadze to Shama.

High tides are regularly encroaching on their homes, leaving them vulnerable to destruction.

In their plea for immediate action, residents are calling on the newly appointed government, under President John Mahama, to prioritize completing the vital sea defense project.

In the absence of adequate protection, residents have resorted to piling refuse along the shore in a desperate attempt to safeguard their homes.

The situation has already caused significant damage. At least 15 homes have been affected by the rising sea, with three lives tragically lost.

 

Among the displaced is Esi Ntefua, a mother of three, who has been left homeless after her one-room house, along with its veranda, was swept away.

Kofi Bondi, another victim, has lost his home and is now renting accommodation.

With the recent appointment of Emelia Arthur as Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, fisherfolk in the area are urgently appealing for swift action.

They fear further destruction and are counting on the new government to fast-track the completion of the sea defense project to prevent more lives and homes from being lost.
