Interior Minister-designate, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has vowed not to reveal the identity of the NPP MP who voted to support the NDC MPs to elect Bagbin as Speaker for the 8th Parliament.
The Asawase MP said the identity of the NPP MP will be a secret till he departs from this earth.
Answering question from the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin during vetting by the Appointments Committee on Friday, Muntaka declared that nobody not even the security agencies will ever know the MP who betrayed the Majority Caucus of the 8th Parliament.
When Afenyo-Markin challenged the lawmaker to say he has information about the MP, Muntaka replied: “You don’t know, it’s not true. You can only guess, you can’t say you know.”
“Everybody in this country has done everything humanly possible to know including the security agencies I believe, to know which of the NPP MPs supported us to elect Mr Speaker.
“I work with people and I have vowed that not even my wife will know this; I will die with it and I meant it,” he said on January 24, 2025.
Muntaka made the statement after Afenyo-Markin had questioned him about his readiness to not spill certain security information if given the nod as Interior Minister.
In the 8th Parliament, the Majority and Minority caucuses both secured 136 MPs. This number would have made it difficult for the Speaker of Parliament to be elected for the 8th Parliament.
However, during the voting process, the NDC secured 137 votes to make their choice, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker. This meant that one of the NPP MPs, who were majority in Parliament at the time joined the the NDC to make Bagbin the Speaker.
Till today, the identity of that NPP MP is not known and Muntaka who was the Chief Whip at the time has pledged to keep this a secret to his grave.
