Presidential directive recovers over 380 diplomatic passports to curb misuse

Over 380 diplomatic passports have been returned following a presidential recall issued by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.

The directive, which expired on January 24, 2025, required the return of passports issued under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

According to an online publication by Citi News, most returns were completed by January 23.

The recall is part of broader efforts to ensure diplomatic passports are used solely for official state purposes, such as facilitating international representation.

These passports grant privileges like expedited customs clearance and tax exemptions but pose security risks when misused.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged to enforce stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future, following concerns about unauthorized possession of these documents by individuals no longer serving in official roles.
