Former Ghana Youth star Odartey Lamptey has said former Ghana coach Sam Arday “was like a father” to him after the WAFA technical director passed away Sunday.
The Celebrated coach who is credited for the multi-system died in Accra yesterday aged 71 following a short illness. He was the first Coach to win an Olympic medal in football in Africa when he led Ghana’s U23 team to pick bronze at the 1992 Games in Barcelona.
He also won the 1995 FIFA U17 World Cup in Ecuador. He handled many clubs in the local league including Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak and Okwahu United.
Nii Odartey Lamptey worked under Coach Arday in Barcelona in 1992 and he has described the demise of the coach as a huge blow to the nation.
“Sam Arday was like my father. He was my everything. I spoke to him one month ago just to thank him for everything he has done for me.
“I remember in 1992, he took me along even when I was even sick. Ghana football has lost a lot,” Odartey told Starrsportsgh.com
Arday has joined a long list of veteran coaches to have passed away in the last two years. Jones Attuquayefio, Osam Duodu, Ben Koufie, C.K. Gyamfi and E.K. Afranie have all died in the last 24 months.
