In a heartwarming display of compassion, the Orange Women’s Network (OWN) at Fidelity Bank, Ghana’s largest privately- owned indigenous bank, extended a helping hand to families facing the challenges of neonatal care during the festive season.
OWN, a vibrant community within Fidelity Bank that empowers women, supported the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, providing crucial support to 49 families and their fragile newborns.
OWN’s intervention was multifaceted, providing emotional, financial, and material support to ease the burdens faced by families navigating the complexities of neonatal care. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which emphasizes universal health coverage, maternal and child health, and reducing neonatal mortality.
The Orange Women’s Network brought much-needed relief to the families at NICU by addressing their emotional and psychological needs. Counseling sessions featured OWN members sharing real-life experiences, including a heartfelt story of a member’s journey with her own premature baby six years earlier. This peer support inspired hope and resilience among mothers facing similar challenges.
In addition, OWN provided respite care with baby gift packs containing feeding accessories, baby clothes, and other essentials. The financial assistance offered by OWN covered the cost of discharge, medicines, and laboratory bills for the neonates.
“The festive season should be a time of joy and celebration,” said Esi Mills-Robertson, a lead founder of OWN and Marketing Director at Fidelity Bank. “However, for families with newborns in the NICU, it can be a period of immense stress and anxiety. We are proud of the Orange Women’s Network for their compassionate initiative. By providing emotional support, financial assistance, and essential supplies, they have brought comfort and hope to these families during a challenging time.”
Recognizing the critical role of NICUs in the survival and care of premature and critically ill newborns, OWN also provided essential supplies to the department. Items such as gloves, purple cannulas, plasters, packs of tissues, and gallons of liquid soap were donated to enhance the operational efficiency of the unit. “We understand the emotional and financial toll that neonatal care can take on families,” remarked Ms. Mills-Robertson. “Our goal was to provide comfort and support during this challenging time. We believe that by easing their burdens, we can help parents focus on the well-being of their babies.”
