Stewards to complement police service at GPL match venues to beef up security
In a bid to enhance security and curb hooliganism at Ghana Premier League (GPL) match venues, DCOP Lydia Donkor has announced plans to introduce stewards to complement the police service. This move comes after the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong, who was stabbed to death during a match in Nsoatre. We are looking into all of these things and hopefully going forward, things are going to be more standardized, DCOP Donkor said. The introduction of stewards is aimed at providing an additional layer of security to support the police. In our football space, we do not have stewards being a standard form of security, adding to what the Police is doing, DCOP Donkor explained. The GPL has been suspended since the incident, with Asante Kotoko withdrawing from the competition until justice is served. Six arrests have been made, including Nsoatreman FC bankroller Ignatius Baffour-Awuah. The resumption date for the Premier League is yet to be announced. The move to introduce stewards is a positive step towards improving security at GPL match venues. It is hoped that this will help to reduce the risk of future incidents and create a safer and more enjoyable experience for fans.
