Black Stars defender Tariq Lamptey has suffered a major setback after Fiorentina confirmed he has torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.
The 24-year-old picked up the injury during Fiorentina’s Serie A clash against Como at the Artemio Franchi Stadium on Sunday.
Lamptey was handed his first start for the Viola since joining them in the summer transfer window, but his night ended prematurely after just 22 minutes.
Initial fears of a serious problem were confirmed on Monday when the club announced the results of scans, ruling the Black Stars defender out for several months.
The news comes as a heavy blow both to Lamptey, who was hoping to establish himself in Italy, and to Ghana, with crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month.
Fiorentina eventually slumped to a 2-1 defeat, suffering back-to-back losses in Serie A.
Despite an early strike from Rolando Mandragora, the Viola were undone by second-half goals from Marc-Oliver Kempf and Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Jayden Addai, who sealed victory for Como in stoppage time.
Lamptey’s injury is expected to sideline him for the majority of the season, marking another frustrating chapter in his career blighted by fitness setbacks.
