Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea continues to cement his status as one of Africa’s most trusted match officials after being appointed Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between Morocco and Cameroon.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) selected Laryea to oversee the video room for the blockbuster encounter, underlining the high level of confidence placed in his judgment, experience and consistency on the continental stage.
He will be assisted by Tunisian referee Haitham Guirat as Assistant VAR, with Mauritanian Aboubacar Sarr serving as second assistant for video technology.
Laryea’s appointment comes as no surprise, given his growing reputation as one of Ghana’s most accomplished referees.
Over the years, he has officiated at major CAF competitions. He was the centre man in the AFCON game between Algeria and Burkina Faso in the group stages.
He has also previously handled CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup matches, where his calm handling of pressure situations has earned widespread respect.
His role will be particularly crucial in a match of such magnitude, where fine margins, controversial decisions and game-changing moments are expected.
With Morocco chasing continental glory on home soil and Cameroon aiming to assert their pedigree as five-time champions, VAR decisions could prove decisive, placing significant responsibility on Laryea and his team.
As the spotlight turns to Rabat, Laryea will once again be at the heart of African football’s biggest moments - this time, from the VAR room.
