Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku says 2025 marked a turning point for Ghana football after what he described as a difficult 2024, noting that lessons learned helped the game recover and progress across several fronts.
The year 2024 proved challenging for the national game, as Ghana suffered a first-round exit at the Africa Cup of Nations and later failed to qualify for the tournament, missing out for the first time in 20 years.
“I think if I go back, 2024 is a year I would always want to forget. It was a very difficult and challenging year for Ghana. But thank God it came and passed us so fast,” Okraku told GFA Media.
He explained that the football family responded positively by confronting its shortcomings and working together.
“As a team, as a family, we worked so well. We were honest with ourselves. We picked up good lessons from both our failures and our successes in 2024. When I’m finished serving, I want the football family to remember me for my honesty. We identified the problems and dealt with them,” he said.
Okraku highlighted several gains in 2025, including the Black Stars going unbeaten during the year and securing qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
“Through the blessings of the Almighty God, 2025 turned out to be an amazing year for us. The height of it was Ghana’s qualification back to the Mundial for the second time in a row,” he noted.
He also pointed to progress in domestic competitions, women’s football, coach education and youth development, citing increased support for the Ghana Premier League, Women’s Premier League and Division One League, as well as expanded elite academy projects and free coaching courses.
“At the governance level, the sanctity of the game is being respected by all key stakeholders,” Okraku added.
