Ghanaian football legend Reverend Osei Kofi has pushed back against criticism surrounding his assertion that the Black Stars faced Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid in 1962.
The Africa Cup of Nations winner revealed that some younger fans have questioned and even mocked his account due to the absence of widespread documentation of the historic encounter.
In a viral video, Osei Kofi insisted the match, which ended 3-3 in Ghana, remains a defining moment of his career.
“In 1962 we played against Real Madrid in Ghana, and people insulted me when I said it. If you did not see me, that does not mean it did not exist. Mbappé and co are just drinking the soup of what had already been prepared. We played against the original Real Madrid,” he said.
The former Black Stars forward suggested that today’s stars, including Kylian Mbappé, benefit from the legacy built by earlier generations. Despite feeling underrated at home, he expressed appreciation for recognition abroad.
“I am grateful that if Ghanaians did not see, foreigners acknowledge that,” he noted.
In March 2025, Osei Kofi was honored in Spain by Real Madrid and Leganés for his contribution to the memorable 1962 fixture and his broader impact on African football.
