The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has placed Ghana’s World Cup hopes in the hands of veteran coach Carlos Queiroz, turning to experience at a crucial moment for the Black Stars.
The Portuguese tactician takes over ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the dismissal of Otto Addo, with preparations having stalled in recent months.
Ghana head into the tournament determined to improve on their group stage exit in 2022, but the build-up has been far from ideal. A run of four consecutive defeats in international friendlies raised concerns over the team’s direction and ultimately led to a change in leadership.
In response, the GFA opted for a steady and experienced hand, with Queiroz edging out several high-profile candidates as the association looks to restore structure and belief within the squad.
His immediate task is clear. With limited time before the tournament, he must quickly stabilise the team, rebuild confidence and shape a competitive unit capable of rising to the challenge.
Ghana face a stern test in Group L, where they will come up against England, Croatia and Panama.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23. Their final group match will be against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
