Former Asante Kotoko star Jordan Opoku has casted doubts about the chances of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 World Cup tournament.
The global showpiece, to be co-hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico will feature an expanded 48 countries, with Ghana securing one of Africa’s automatic nine slots for the tournament.
The West African powerhouse are paired in Group L alongside football powerhouses England, Croatia, and Panama.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23, and wrapping up their group matches against Croatia on June 27.
Speaking to Koforidua-based Bryt FM, the former Ghanaian midfielder stressed it will be difficult for the Black Stars to excel at the World Cup, urging Ghanaians to lower expectations.
“It will be very difficult for the Black Stars to perform at the 2026 World Cup. We have a new coach (Carlos Queiroz) who still needs time to implement his philosophy, style of play and preferred players. In my opinion, it will take time for him to fully settle into the system.
We must manage our expectations heading into the World Cup because we are not there yet. We should not expect too much from the team at this stage. The focus should be on building for the future and creating a solid team,” he said.
It will be Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, having previously competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals.
