Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku has described Ghana's 1-1 draw with Wales as a "solid result", insisting the team has something to build on as they ramp up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the friendly in Cardiff, the Istanbul Basaksehir centre-back acknowledged that the team felt they could have won the game but chose to focus on the positives.
"We felt like we should have won the game, but it's just the little details, and it's something to build on. With the short time we've worked together, I think it's a solid result," Opoku said.
Caleb Yirenkyi scored his debut goal for Ghana to give the Black Stars the lead, but Wales fought back to earn a share of the spoils. Opoku played the entire duration of the match, delivering a performance that should boost his chances of starting in Ghana's World Cup opener against Panama on June 17.
Despite the disappointment of not securing the win, the defender remained positive about the team's direction under head coach Carlos Queiroz, who was appointed with limited preparation time.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. For Opoku, the result in Cardiff may not have been perfect, but it is a step in the right direction.
