Black Princesses head coach Charles Sampson has described Ghana’s opening FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup defeat to Ecuador as a “very weird game” as his team prepares to face South Korea.

Ghana suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Ecuador in their opening Group D match, with goalkeeper Najat forced off through injury and replaced by Precious Asante.

Reflecting on the loss, Sampson admitted that the team struggled to perform at their usual level.

"I would just say the first game actually was a very weird game. Weird in many sense that what we normally do at ease was not really working and it can also be so many factors difficult to pinpoint. But as a team and as a sort of character we have in the team here, this is a challenge that will handle it well," he told GFA Communications.

"The girls were all down, just like myself, the first day and so, but we have shaked it up and now we are ready to go and redeem ourselves. We are looking forward for tomorrow,"

Ghana will take on South Korea on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, knowing a positive result is crucial to their hopes of progressing from the group.
