Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare remains the only Ghana Premier League player in the Black Stars squad, continuing a remarkable run that began with his selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and continued to the tournament in North America.
The 34-year-old has retained his place in Carlos Queiroz’s 24-man squad for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, as well as the international friendly against Morocco.
Asare was the only home-based player selected for Ghana’s World Cup squad and went to the tournament as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
However, he was handed his opportunity during the tournament and ended up making three appearances, starting against England and Croatia after coming on as a substitute against Panama.
He kept clean sheets against Panama and England, with his performance in the goalless draw against England in Boston earning widespread praise.
His impressive World Cup campaign has been followed by strong form for Hearts of Oak in the new season.
Asare has kept two clean sheets in Hearts’ opening two Ghana Premier League matches of the new season and was decisive in their 2-1 comeback win over Bibiani Gold Stars, saving a late penalty to preserve the victory.
His consistency has ensured that he remains in Queiroz’s plans despite the coach selecting a squad dominated by players based outside Ghana.
Ghana will face Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29. The Black Stars will then travel to Morocco for an international friendly against the Atlas Lions on October 4.
