There was drama at the Kumasi Baba Yara sports stadium yesterday, when Kotoko clashed with Dansoman Liberty Professionals in the opening game of the 2016/2017 premier league.
The two sides started the game on a serious note and kept knocking at each other’s doors for an early goal, but it was Liberty who benefited from their incisive attacks.
The Scientific soccer lads opened the scores in the 35th minute and held on to the lead for the rest of the first department of the game.
However, Kotoko resumed the second half in good spirit and took over the game from their visitors.
Their wing play seemed to work perfectly for them, as any time they worked their way from the flanks, Liberty did not seem to have any antidote.
One of the in swingers from the flanks paid off, as they were awarded a penalty kick, following a foul committed by a Liberty defender.
Yakubu Mohammed beautifully converted the spot kick in the 57th minute. Yakubu scored his personal second goal, which eventually became the winning goal for his side.
Though Liberty came into the picture in the dying embers of the game, their pressure couldn’t fetch them the much needed equalizer.
It was a good start for the new coach of Kotoko, Zdravko Lugarusic, who is playing in the local league for the first time.
At the new Cape Coast Sport Stadium, Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs played a well rehearsed game under their new coach Richardo Da Rocha, when they came up against new entrants Bolga All Stars.
Dwarfs’ former play maker turned lead striker, Joseph Esor, set the stadium ablaze in the 11th minute when he scored a perfect goal from Christopher Bonney’s cross.
The ‘Abontoa Abontoa’ boys started the second half as though they were down and started parrying pressure on their opponents in the second half.
Their enormous pressure yielded great dividend as they exploited their opponents in all departments of the game and stretched them for more goals.
They eventually won the game by 3-1. Ishahaku Mohammed scored the consolation goal for Bolga All Stars.
At the Dormaa Agyeman Badu park, a last minute goal from Abraham Sasraku saved Aduana Stars against ObuasiAshGold. This ensured that the home side carried all the three maximum points at stake.
Tema Youth remained the better side when they clashed with Brekum Chelsea at the Tema park.
Medeama Sporting Club on the other hand won their first game in the premiership this season against WAFA at the Tarkwa T&A Park by a lone goal. The only goal was scored by Bernard Ofori.
The match between Hearts of Oak and Inter Allies will be honoured today at the EL-Wak stadium.
Meanwhile, the game between Great Olympics and Bechem United as well as the game between WA All Stars and Elmina Sharks could not be honoured.
This was because both Waq All Stars and Bechem United played in the CAF champions league and consideration cup respectively.
