The Western Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) say they are expecting a massive turnout for the ‘Enough is Enough” demonstration scheduled for Sekondi-Takoradi this morning.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the D-day, the party said the convening point for the demonstration is Takoradi Shopping Mall, where they would march through to Effiakuma Number 9, towards Sekondi and end up at the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Sekondi, to present their petition.
The demonstration, which is being undertaken by the party in all sixteen regions across the country, is geared towards compelling the Electoral Commission (EC) to pander to the party’s request, for the former to allow the independent electoral body to audit the Voter Register.
Joseph Nelson, Regional Secretary of the party, addressing the conference, indicated the party’s Members of Parliament (MP) would take part in the demonstration. He explained that the demonstration has become necessary following the EC’s intransigent position not to allow the voters register to be audited.
The Electoral Commission (EC) recently exhibited the provisional voters register for the 2024 general elections after it embarked on a series of exercises that included limited registration, voter transfer and opened application for proxy among others.
The exercise led to the NDC party raising issues with the Voters Register. The party insisted that a total of 243,540 previous transfers illegally have been added to 2024 transfers, including repetition of illegally transferred names.
According to the party 15,000 unidentified voter transfer paths (due to fake registration of voters) -3,957 voters in 2023 register, but deleted from 2024 provisional register due to transfer were found.
Also 2,094 voters transferred to different Polling Stations, but not found in the Absentee Voter List as required by law, and that aside, corrupt files not showing names and photos of the registered voters.
The party drew the attention of the EC and requested for a meeting to see to an amicable resolution.
At the said meeting, NDC made request for an independent forensic audit of the provisional voter register, Re-exhibition of the register and an updated register.
The Regional Secretary, Joseph Nelson, flanked by other executives like Nana Toku, Regional Chairman, Samuel Gbolu, Vice Chairman amongst others, explained it was upon the basis of the above that the NDC was demonstrating across all the sixteen regions.
He consequently called on all Ghanaians who have the democracy and the peace of Ghana at heart to join the Tuesday 17th of September 2024 for a peaceful protest to demand for free, fair and transparent elections dubbed ‘Enough is Enough Demonstration’.
“We want to send a strong message to the EC that the NDC will not sit idly by for them to manipulate election 2024 to our disadvantage.
“To that end, Nelson assured every preparation has been made to ensure that “we turn out in our numbers to make the protest a very successful one. We wish, therefore, to invite you, our friends in the media to join us on this journey tomorrow”.
