Certified results indicate that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured 15 Parliamentary seats, out of 17 seats in the Western region.
What this means is that, NPP’s seven parliamentary seats have been whittled down to two, leaving it with only Takoradi and Effia.
The NDC, on the other hand, increased its parliamentary seats from eight to fifteen, by adding seven more seats.
Whilst most incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) of the NDC retained their seats, whilst their counterparts in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered heavy casualties.
For instance, George Mireku Duker, MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem and Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources was shockingly defeated by a new entrant, Sheik Issah Salifu Taylor.
Duker, a two time MP polled 27,470 whilst his main competitor from the NDC polled 35,820 to snatch the seat from him.
An independent candidate, Joy Joycelyn Andoh, a presumptive member of the NPP secured 12,745.
Andrew Egyapa Mercer, incumbent MP for Sekondi, was also another biggest casualty. Mercer, who is the sector Minister for Tourism and having served as MP for two terms, lost to new entrant Blay Nyamekeh, who secured a total of 14,558 votes to unseat Mercer who polled 11, 084.
Dr Prince Hamid Armah, a first time MP for the people of Kwesmintsim also lost his seat to a new entrant, Lawyer Phillip Fiifi Buckman.
Mr Buckman, who is contesting the seat for the second time as a candidate, after losing to his main contender in the 2020 elections, revenged his defeat in the 2020 election by polling 15,927 to Prince Hamid Armah’s 13,317 votes.
Independent candidate, Joseph Mensah, popularly known as ‘Joe Mensah’, who was the Legislator for the people of Kwesimintsim from 2017 to 2020 on the ticket of NPP, contested the seat as an independent candidate polling 1,835 votes.
Attempts were made by the NPP to convince Joe Mensah to step down, but he refused, culminating in the splitting of votes that went in favour of Fiifi Buckman.
John Sennie, an incumbent MP for Mpohor, on the ticket of the NPP was also another casualty. He lost his seat to new entrant, Kofi Bentil, who polled 11,680 to snatch the seat from the hands of incumbent Sennie, who managed 8,299 votes.
In Essikado Ketan, Professor Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah proved why she almost snatched the seat from incumbent Joe Ghartey in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
This time round, she snatched the seat from the NPP by beating her main contender, Charles Bissue,a former presidential staffer.
Dr. Grace polled a whopping 26,166 as compared to Bissue’s 17,754 to become the MP-elect for Essikado Ketan.
In Shama, Emelia Arthur, a former District Chief Executive (DCE) and a former presidential staffer staged a comeback for the Parliamentary seat.
She beat her competitor, Isaac Kwamina Afful, a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lower Pra Rural Bank to snatch the seat from the hands of the NPP.
Emelia polled 23,043 to beat Kwamina Afful who managed 17,082.
In Ahanta West, the new entrant, Mavis Kukua Bissue, on the ticket of the NDC, also snatched the constituency seat from the hands of the NPP.
Kukua Bissue polled 28,227 to beat Francis Eric Pobee, who managed 19,663.
Emanuel Armah Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle retained his seat by beating his main contender, Kwasi Bonzo.
Amah Buah, who has represented the people of Ellembelle for five terms, polled 31,987 to beat his contender, Kwasi Bonzo, who garnered 18,454 votes.
Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, Regional Minister and MP for Takoradi, together with Lawyer Boamah Nyarko both won Takoradi and Effia constituency seats for the NPP as consolation.
Certified results showed that Okyere Darko Mensah polled 16,413 to retain his seat whilst his closest rival, Fredrick Faidoo polled 15,517.
Boamah Nyarko managed to retain the Effia seat for the NPP after polling 15, 307 to beat new entrant Majeed Dokurugu, who managed 13,522.
