The Circuit Court 3 in Accra has granted bail to a 26-year-old corn miller, Kwame Asare, who has been charged with preparing to commit a crime, namely causing unlawful damage, after he allegedly planned to set fire to shops at the Kantamanto Market.
Kwame Asare pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court, presided over by Her Honour Susana Eduful. Following his plea, the court admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with two sureties.
The sureties are to be immediate family members of the accused, each earning not less than GH¢1,500 per month.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo, the accused’s actions were allegedly motivated by ongoing troubles he was facing with some individuals within the market.
The prosecution indicated that it would file all disclosures and witness statements as investigations continue.
Kwame Asare is facing a charge of preparation to commit crime, to wit causing unlawful damage, contrary to Sections 19 and 172 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Presenting the brief facts of the case, the prosecution stated that on December 9, 2025 complainants led by one Simon Nyala, who are National Security Personnel, arrested the accused at the Kantamanto Market, after receiving intelligence that he was planning to burn down some shops in the market.
He was subsequently handed over to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command. During investigations, the accused allegedly admitted that some individuals in the market had been troubling him, prompting his decision to burn down their shops.
A search conducted in his room within the market reportedly led to the retrieval of a gallon containing several litres of petrol, which the prosecution said was intended for the act. The accused was subsequently charged and arraigned before the court.
The case has been adjourned to January 27, 2026, for continuation.
