About 118 parliamentary candidates who contested the 2024 parliamentary election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but lost have announced their support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the party’s presidential primary, slated for January 31, 2026.
The endorsement was made public at a press conference and is seen as strengthening internal support for Dr Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, as he seeks to lead the party into its next electoral contest.
The former candidates said their collective decision reflects growing unity within the party, noting that many of the party’s parliamentary standard bearers from the 2024 elections are now coalescing around a single aspirant.
They explained that their declaration builds on an earlier endorsement by 63 NPP Members of Parliament elected in 2024, which they said points to increasing momentum for Dr Bawumia across the party’s structures.
According to the group, the decision was taken after wide-ranging consultations within the party and beyond.
These engagements, they said, involved polling station and constituency executives, former party officials, councils of elders and patrons, as well as youth groups, market women, farmers, fisherfolk, business leaders, opinion leaders, religious leaders and traditional authorities.
They said feedback from these interactions indicated strong grassroots support for Dr Bawumia across several constituencies.
The former candidates stressed that their endorsement was based on careful assessment, responsibility and conviction, and was not influenced by inducement, coercion or pressure.
They described Dr Bawumia, a former Vice President of Ghana, as a visionary leader with a record of competence and innovation, citing his role in advancing Ghana’s digitalisation agenda, his contributions to economic management, and his leadership in initiatives such as the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and broader macroeconomic stabilisation efforts.
The group further described Dr Bawumia as the most prepared, experienced and electable candidate to lead the party forward, with a vision focused on digitalisation, economic transformation, infrastructure development, human capital development, agricultural modernisation and good governance.
They pledged to actively support his bid in the upcoming presidential primary and future general elections, while calling on party members to unite behind his candidacy in the interest of the NPP and the country.
