Anwomaso-Kumasi Line Upgrade Takes Off

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the Anwomaso–Kumasi Line Upgrade Project will increase power supply to Kumasi from the current 364MW to 1000MW and ensure frequent and sustainable electricity for residents.

The Minister said during a working visit to Kumasi to acquaint himself with work on the 161kV Anwomaso–Kumasi (K1-K2) Transmission Line Project that the country was in a difficult situation and has been deliberating for some time on how best to execute the project.

He explained that Kumasi is heavily built and a lot of encroachment has been made on GRIDCo’s right of way.

He noted that the existing lines are more than 30 years old and that with increasing demand and the installation of new generation units in Kumasi, there is an urgent need for a better way of evacuating power.

According to him, the initial timeline for the work was six months. However, he directed that shifts and multiple gangs be deployed to compress the duration to three months.

Dr Jinapor explained that the upgrade requires the old line to be taken down and a new line erected on the same path because building an entirely new line elsewhere would be too costly and inconvenient.

He added that the upgrade from 364MW to about 1000MW represents more than a threefold increase in capacity and will serve Kumasi for a very long time. The Minister assured residents of Kumasi that the Ministry was paying close attention to the electricity situation in the city and appealed to the residents of Kumasi to bear with the ministry because there may be some inconveniences during this phase adding that the public will be informed ahead of any planned outages to avoid disruption to business activities.

Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo), said GRIDCo will collaborate with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to inform the public, especially areas that will be affected during the exercise in order not to inconvenience residents and prevent electrocution.
