Some stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Tema Constituency have rejected the results of Saturday’s executive elections, arguing that the election was conducted while serious legal and internal party issues remained unresolved.
According to the concerned stakeholders, there was a pending court action challenging, among other things, the validity of the album or register used for the conduct of the election.
Following the expiration of the initial 10-day injunction, the Central Tema NPP stakeholders, led by Prince Anim Nuamah, told newsmen that a Notice of Motion for Interlocutory Injunction was duly served on the relevant parties, including the General Secretary of the party, the Chairman of the Regional Elections Committee, the Central Tema Constituency Chairman, Mr Charles Boateng, and the Regional Police Command.
The matter, which was initially scheduled for its first hearing on August 26, 2026, was subsequently brought forward and heard on August 11, 2026. It was then adjourned to August 19, 2026.
“We have, therefore, been patiently awaiting the determination of the legal issues before taking any action that could potentially undermine the judicial process. It is against this background that we find the conduct of an election at this stage deeply concerning,” Anim Nuamah said.
While awaiting the determination of the court, the stakeholders said an official invitation from the National Elections Committee was sent to them to participate in a process aimed at resolving the substantive issues in dispute.
“Following an initial hearing involving the interested parties, the National Elections Committee constituted a three-member committee to engage the parties and find an amicable resolution to the issues. As of today, however, we have not received any report, determination, or further communication from the three-member committee.
“We, therefore, expected all parties to exercise restraint and allow both the internal dispute-resolution mechanism and the judicial process to run their course,” he explained.
What heightened their concern, he explained, was the manner in which the election was communicated to them.
He said: “At approximately 5:00 p.m. on August 11, 2026, a WhatsApp message was circulated by the Secretary of the Constituency Election Committee, informing us that an election was to be held the following morning.
“We immediately requested an official communication from the appropriate authority confirming the decision and providing the basis for the election. Unfortunately, the source of the purported directive could not be provided to us.
“Our subsequent efforts to obtain official confirmation and clarification from the appropriate party structures, both at the regional and national levels, proved unsuccessful. Under these circumstances, it was practically impossible for us to adequately prepare our people and participate meaningfully in an election whose notice, arrangements and authority remained unclear.
“So, our position is based not on a refusal to participate in the democratic process, but on serious and legitimate concerns surrounding the electoral process, particularly the existence of a pending court matter, an ongoing internal dispute-resolution process initiated by the National Elections Committee, and the manner in which the election was announced and conducted,” Anim Nuamah said.
Their inability to participate in the election, he explained, should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the process or as an acceptance of the purported results.
He said: “We reject any attempt to portray the outcome as a legitimate reflection of the will of the entire Central Tema Constituency, where one side of an ongoing dispute was effectively unable to participate in a process announced at such short notice and without satisfactory official clarification.
“We are particularly concerned about reports that the election was conducted and supervised by individuals whose mandate and authority, in the circumstances, were not sufficiently communicated to the stakeholders. We, therefore, call on the party hierarchy to reject and set aside the purported results of the election until the outstanding legal and internal party matters have been properly resolved.”
In the interest of peace, unity and the credibility of the party, Prince Anim Nuamah called on the party hierarchy to reject and annul the Central Tema Constituency election conducted on August 13, 2026, and allow the pending court proceedings to take their course, particularly as the matter has been adjourned to August 19, 2026.
The group said the three-member committee appointed by the National Elections Committee should be allowed to complete its mandate and communicate its findings to all concerned parties.
It further called for any subsequent election to be conducted only after the outstanding legal and internal party issues had been properly resolved.
