The Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly has climaxed a week-long cleaning and sensitisation exercise in the municipality with a clean up exercise in Kokomlemle-Accra New Town and its environs at the weekend.
It also forms part of a series of ongoing implementation of action plans by the assembly to beautify the municipality.
The municipal team members joined by residents, market women, shop owners, landlords, and cooperate organisations desilted gutters and swept the streets and the frontage of their shops, homes and other public places to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Mohammed Quaye commended all participants for availing themselves to the cause which had been a successful exercise.
He said as much as issues of sanitation continued to be a challenge in various sections of the area , the assembly was bent on bringing the canker to the barest minimum through constant sensitisation programmes as dictated by the related action plans.
The municipality, he said, has by far improved tremendously in sanitation standards since the assembly began to rigorously enforce the sanitation laws.
He called on residents to be environmentally- conscious in their daily routines to maintain a healthy environment for their total wellbeing.
Alhaji Quaye said the exercise was not a nine-day wonder, adding that the assembly would double its effort to ensure that the municipality scored high marks in terms of sanitation.
The assembly, he said would not relent on its efforts to enforce the bye-laws in a constant attempt to compel recalcitrant individuals to do their part to promote environmental- well- being.
The Municipal Environment Health Officer, Mr Charles Tsatsu expressed satisfaction at the success of the exercise.
He said though the assembly had existed for about three years, it continued to make giant strides in the fight against the canker of poor sanitation.
Mr Tsatsu said the assembly was now at the implementation stage of its action plans having conducted much public education and sensitisation, adding that it had started enforcing the laws for which reason some offenders faced court prosecution recently for sanitation offences.
According to him, because sanitation is a major issue in the area, the assembly prioritises environmental issues which have resulted in the improved conditions in the area.
He said assembly members and the task force were at the disposal of the assembly to ensure the desired outcomes were achieved.
Mr Tsatsu said the assembly would continue to monitor the area regularly to achieve the lofty goals it had set for itself.
On the issue of squatters and their activities on the environment in sections of the municipality, particularly ‘Circle’, he said sister assemblies who shared boundaries at the area were fashioning out solutions to the problem.
