A seminar organised by the Ghana Wrestling Association (GWA) for coaches and wrestlerswas opened at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.
The seminar would also include practical exercises and other activities aimed at equipping Ghanaian coaches, technical handlers and wrestlers with the new rules of the sport in order to improve the standards in Ghana.
The seminar, which started on Monday with over 30 coaches and wrestlers, would end on Sunday, September 17.
The resource person for the seminar is a renowned wrestling practitioner, Seedy Choor, from The Gambia.
Speaking at the opening of the seminar, the President of the GWA, Mr Norbert Amefu, said it was the third time such a seminar has been organised for coaches and wrestlers.
“This is more advanced because the resource person is one of the best on the continent. He would be assisting with techniques and rules,” he stated.
Participants, he said, had been drawn from five regions including the Greater Accra, adding that, the participants especially the wrestlers would improve marginally after the training.
“This is just the beginning of many of such courses to happen this year. In about three weeks from now, a resource person from the US would also arrive in the country for a similar exercise,” he stated.
The exercise, he said, was part of preparations for the African Games scheduled for March next year and ensuring Ghana won medals at the event.
“We have lifted the image of wrestling since we took office. We have been to the World Championships which we never participated in as well as the continental games,” he stated.
One of the participants, Coach Richard Hammond, commended the GWA President for organising the course and bringing on a resource person with over 40 years’ experience to help them improve.
“There are a lot he is bringing on board that would help us prepare athletes for championships. It would help unlock some of the potentials in the athletes and personally improve upon training activities,” he stated.
He said they were getting ready for the African Games which would serve as qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Paris.
