Upper East Region NDC supports 24-hour economy proposal

The Upper East Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its support for former President John Dram­aniMahama’s proposal to imple­ment a 24-hour economy if he is elected into power.

They believe that this policy is the solution to revive the strug­gling economy and alleviate the high unemployment rate among Ghanaian youth.

The NDC members are urging the Ghanaian electorate to rally behind Mahama and the NDC in the upcoming 2024 polls to ensure that this policy can be im­plemented and bring relief to the suffering Ghanaian population.

At a news conference held in Zuarungu, the Upper East Re­gional Communications Officer, Jonathan AbdallaSalifu, highlight­ed the widespread support for the policy from various stakeholders, including civil society organisa­tions, academia, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

He emphasised that the pro­posed policy had the potential to address the economic crisis and tackle the country’s high unem­ployment rate.

Mr Salifu also drew attention to the significant youth popula­tion in Ghana and the limited job opportunities available, which has resulted in wasted potential and increased poverty rates.

He attributed this situation to the neglect of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The youth bulge is evident with statistics from the GSS (2021) showing that the propor­tion of children has declined from 41.3 per cent since 2000 to 35.3 per cent in 2021, while that of young people increased from 34.6 per cent to 38.2 per cent in 2021. This clearly shows a transition from a population with more children to one now dominated by more young people, and the majority of these abled hands continue to be wasted following the limited job opportunities the country can create,” Mr Salifu said.
