The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has completed the vetting process for 569 candidates seeking the role of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in the Ashanti and Northern regions.
A total of 343 persons have applied for consideration for the positions for the 43 administrative districts in the region.
The Ashanti region has the highest number of 43 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the country.
Out of the 343 applicants, about 20 of them are women with the Atwima Nwabiagya North Municipality having the highest number of applications of 16 followed by Ejura-Sekyedumase while Obuase West has the least number of two.
A panel of nine members evaluated the applicants for the MMDCE positions, following the establishment of specific criteria by the national leadership of the NDC.
The panel, chaired by Augustus Nana Akwasi, the Ashanti regional Chairman, includes representatives from the regional executive committee and other acknowledged factions within the party, who will conduct a thorough assessment to ascertain the candidates’ qualifications.
The three-day exercise started on Thursday January 16 and ended on Saturday, the 18th.
On the first day, candidates from 11 Municipalities and Districts participated in the interview process.
Madam Eunice Ohenewaa Ansu, the sole female among the seven candidates representing the Juaben Municipality, along with Nana Biribireba Boateng, who were both awaiting their interviews, shared with the Ghanaian Times why they deserved to be given the nod.
The Assistant Regional Secretary of the NDC, Baah Acheamfuor, who attended the initial session of the interview, expressed satisfaction about the applicants’ performance to date, particularly noting their extensive understanding of the municipalities and districts they aspire to govern.
He revealed that 13 of the candidates faced petitions against them, which were addressed during the questioning.
Mr Baah Acheamfuor also outlined several key factors that the Committee would take into account when assessing the applicants’ prospects.
The Assistant Regional Secretary announced that the interview panel will select the top three candidates from each district and forward their qualifications to the Presidency.
This, he said, would facilitate the identification of the most exceptional candidate for the final nomination to the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies for approval, thereby concluding the process.

A total of 226 individuals have submitted applications for the positions of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the 16 districts in the Northern Region.
Sagnarigu Municipal leads with the highest number of applicants at 23, followed by Kpandai with 17, and Tamale Metropolitan with 16. Kumbungu and Tolon each have 15 applicants, while Yendi Municipal has 14. Bimbilla and Nanton each received 13 applications.
The remaining districts are Karaga with 12 applicants, Gusheigu and Savelugu with 11 each, Wulensi with 9, Zabzugu and Saboba with 8 each, and Tatale Sanguli with 7 applicants.
The Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Mohammed Abdul-Sallam, disclosed this to the media in an interview during the vetting of the applicants at the Northern Regional Council in Tamale on Sunday.
He emphasised that there were no issues concerning any disruptions during the vetting procedure.
Mr Sallam indicated that the objective was to identify three candidates to be recommended for final interviews and the selection of the substantive Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for the various Assemblies nationwide.
“We have given the opportunity to all party members who have the interest to apply because we don’t want a situation where that becomes the point of confusions in the districts,” he added.
He noted that they would finish the vetting by Tuesday January 21 and urged all applicants to abide by the party rules and regulations
CPP supports ORAL, expects recovery of loots
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has thrown its full support behind the Operation Recovery of Assets and Loot (ORAL) initiative, calling for a comprehensive recovery of state assets misappropriated since 1966.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, the CPP condemned the misuse of public office and called for the reclamation of all state properties sold or allocated improperly.
The CPP described ORAL as a patriotic initiative, asserting that only those who have looted state resources or lack national loyalty would oppose it. Acquah expressed frustration at the historical misuse of state enterprises and institutions by individuals who were entrusted with their management.
“Nobody can say that the ORAL is a bad initiative unless they are unpatriotic or have looted the state themselves.
It is absurd and annoying that people who were employed by the state ended up selling the very State enterprises, institutions and other properties to themselves and their cronies,” portions of the statement noted.
The party outlined its expectations for the ORAL initiative, emphasising that the recovery effort must include all assets, from state vehicles sold to politicians and civil servants to state lands used for illegal activities such as galamsey and called for perpetrators of such acts to be surcharged accordingly.
“All lands vested under the care of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, which have been misused for illegal activities, must be recovered,” the statement declared.
The CPP highlighted 1966 as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s history, marking the beginning of widespread impunity following the coup that overthrew Dr Kwame Nkrumah, arguing that this event enabled military and government officials to allocate state assets to themselves at low prices, a trend the party believes must be reversed.
“As Nkrumaists, we demand the recovery of looted state assets dating back to 1966. The coup sowed the seeds of impunity, and it is time to rectify this historical injustice,” it indicated.
