The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed that the government has plans to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
He revealed this while addressing journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament.
He explained that the decision forms part of broader efforts to reflect Ghana’s democratic values and national identity in public institutions.
“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” the Majority Leader said, stressing
that a bill would be presented to Parliament in line with established procedures.
He mentioned that such decisions must be grounded in law and guided by the will of the people.
The announcement indicates a major change to one of the most recognisable national landmarks in the country.
The suggested renaming of the Kotoka International Airport is expected to generate public debate in the country.
About 5 months ago a public debate erupted about the change in greeting at the Airport from Akwaaba meaning welcome in the Twi language to Obaake meaning welcome in the Ga language.
