Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided insight into the high number of games played by summer signing Jeremie Frimpong, citing Mohamed Salah's earlier absence as a primary factor while also expressing caution about the Dutch defender's workload.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Premier League fixture against AFC Bournemouth, Slot confirmed that Frimpong's consistent presence in the lineup was partly due to a shortage of options on the right side of the pitch.
"One of the reasons Jeremie played so many games is because he was the only player before Mohamed Salah came back that I had for the right side," Slot explained.
Frimpong, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen, has made 17 appearances this season, contributing two goals and an assist with his intense, high-speed style of play.
However, Slot acknowledged that managing the 24-year-old's minutes is a significant concern given his recent injury history and playing style.
"It's also a risk because he's been out quite long this season, and now he has to play almost every game," the manager stated. "He's, as you can see, an intense player. "He's so fast, so we have to take good care of him, but he's had a big impact since he's played."
Slot's comments highlight the strategic dilemma facing managers when balancing immediate team needs with long-term player welfare. With Salah now returning to full fitness, Liverpool may be able to rotate Frimpong more effectively as they continue their push in the Premier League, where they currently occupy fourth position.
The manager's transparent explanation provides context for Frimpong's prominent role while signalling Liverpool's intention to protect one of their key assets as the season progresses.
