The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, believes the Ghana Premier League can compete with the best leagues on the African continent if it can build and maintain consistency across all aspects of its development.
Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Asante Twum pointed to recent progress, including a significant government-backed financial boost for clubs, as foundational steps.
Ahead of the current 2025/26 season, each of the 18 Premier League clubs received GHS 1 million through a partnership between the GFA and Adesa Productions. "We have to be consistent," Asante Twum said. "Our clubs must show desire, and desire comes with quality players and good coaching."
He stressed that bridging the gap with established leagues in Morocco, South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria is a long-term project. "Those leagues have been consistent over the years, and we haven’t had that consistency," he noted.
"It will take time; more injection of capital, improvement in human resources, technical abilities, administration, and player remuneration. With time, we will get there."
Asante Twum highlighted a major milestone in the league's stability, which he sees as a critical prerequisite for growth. "For many years, this is the first time we’ve had an uninterrupted league without court cases, injunctions, or disruptions. That consistency creates the right atmosphere for clubs to grow," he explained.
While acknowledging the current competitive disparity, the GFA official expressed measured optimism, framing the recent five-year period of an unbroken league calendar as the start of a new chapter.
He emphasised that sustained investment, improved club structures, and uninterrupted competition are the pillars upon which Ghanaian clubs can build to challenge Africa's footballing powerhouses.
