Former France defender Marcel Desailly has expressed a heartfelt desire to see Ghana reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, revealing a strong emotional connection to the country of his birth despite offering a broader assessment of Africa’s chances at the tournament.
Desailly made the remarks in Abidjan during activities surrounding the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, presented by Coca-Cola, where he reflected on Africa’s growing influence in global football.
While acknowledging the continent’s improved competitiveness, the Ghana-born 1998 World Cup winner admitted that his greatest personal wish is to see the Black Stars achieve an unprecedented run to the final.
"We're now nine African nations in the system, one will reach the final. Maybe Ivory Coast even though I would love Ghana to reach the final, I believe Ivory Coast have the potential."
Ghana will be aiming to make a strong impact in the expanded 48-team competition, with group stage matches scheduled against Panama, England, and Croatia.
The fixtures will be hosted at Toronto’s BMO Field, Gillette Stadium in Boston, and Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, respectively.
