Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has opened up on the intensity of the Kenyan Premier League title race, acknowledging the pressure from AFC Leopards while expressing confidence in his side's ability to handle the heat.
K'Ogalo reinforced their position at the top with a commanding 3-0 victory over KCB at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, restoring a six-point cushion over their closest rivals. Leopards had temporarily narrowed the gap with a 2-1 win over Posta Rangers the previous day.
Speaking after the match, the Ghanaian tactician welcomed the tension that comes with a tight title race.
"Of course, in football there is always pressure, and we like it; it is a healthy one," Akonnor said.
"The team that will have the nerves to keep going is the team that will probably go far."
Gor Mahia currently lead the standings with 46 points from 21 matches, while AFC Leopards trail on 40 points with a game in hand.
Akonnor pointed to his squad's development as a reason for optimism.
"If you look at it some four, five months ago, we would be a little bit worried, but now we are very confident of how the players possess things, and how they play."
The former Ghana international also praised his team's performance against KCB, highlighting their aggression and tactical discipline.
"We were a little bit aggressive⦠We didn't want to give them a chance, and we did it very well."
With five crucial fixtures remainingâagainst Posta Rangers, Ulinzi Stars, Shabana, Tusker FC, and Kariobangi Sharksâthe title race is far from over. But Akonnor believes his side has the composure to go the distance.
