Ghana Football Association Referees Manager Alex Kotey has issued a strong warning to match officials over the standard of refereeing in the Ghana Premier League, insisting that underperforming referees will be removed if they fail to improve.
Kotey made the remarks on the GFA Podcast amid growing concerns about controversial decisions in the league this season, including disputed penalties and goals either allowed or disallowed.
According to him, the association has already introduced measures aimed at improving officiating standards and dealing with referees who consistently make errors.
“We've put a lot of structures in place, and we are trying to plug some of them out, but it's been quite slow because we need to be very tactful in doing that,” Kotey said.
He revealed that several referees have already been sanctioned for poor performances.
“We have placed a lot of referees on ice for errors. Where you see a referee who is not in a position to be developed, you kick the person out,” he added.
His comments come at a time when a number of controversial incidents have dominated discussions in the Ghana Premier League.
One of the most talked-about moments this season occurred during a match between Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun's Park, where referee Julian Nunoo disallowed a Kotoko goal.
Officials of Hearts of Oak have also raised concerns over what they described as repeated decisions that undermine the integrity of the competition.
Kotey maintained that the GFA remains committed to improving refereeing standards to protect the credibility of the domestic league.
