Former Black Stars Management Committee member Kudjoe Fianoo has outlined why Ghana's technical director, Winfried Schäfer, should be handed the reins of the national team on an interim basis ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Kessben Sports, Fianoo argued that Schäfer's deep understanding of Ghanaian football makes him the ideal short-term solution, especially with time running out before the tournament.
"The technical director at the GFA understands the Ghanaian terrain, so I'll suggest we give him the national team to handle on an interim basis while we take our time to look for a new coach," Fianoo said.
"My fear is that we don't have enough time on our side. So my advice is that we have a technical director who, some few years ago, was interested in the Black Stars coaching job, but we ended up giving Otto the job and gave the current technical director the directorship role."
Fianoo highlighted that Schäfer already knows the players, the local football culture, and the challenges within the setup, which would allow him to hit the ground running without a lengthy adaptation period.
"I think we should give him the job and take our time to do due diligence and find a coach who will take us through the short, medium and long term, because we're becoming a country that appoints a new coach every year."
He also expressed concern over Ghana's frequent coaching changes, urging the GFA to adopt a more sustainable long-term plan.
The GFA is expected to announce a new Black Stars head coach in the coming days. Fianoo's suggestion offers a practical alternative: let Schäfer steer the ship for the World Cup while the federation conducts a thorough search for a permanent successor.
